Shadow space wanted?

Then comes a protective umbrella as called. And there are garden, balcony or terrace not only in different colors, but also in suitable construction for large and small sunbeds. We explain what to look for when buying a parasol and introduce our five favorites.

The classic among the parasols consists of a fabric covering on spokes, which are attached to the mast in a holder. By sliding mechanism you can move the struts together with fabric upwards, so that unfolds the fabric screen, snaps up and then protects against too much sun and sometimes a few raindrops. Other variants are the market umbrella, the Ampelschirm or half screen. We explain the different construction methods in comparison, so that you find the optimal model for you.

These different construction methods are available:

Market Umbrella: The most common type of umbrella you can find is also called the center pole or center mast and is the classic construction. This means that the mast is fixed in the middle, which has the disadvantage that the umbrella pole can always be in the way. The umbrella is attached to the ground, usually by a stand. Depending on the weight of the stand, the parasol is accordingly stable.

Sunshade: The model also called free-armshade is convenient for anyone who wants a continuous sun-protected area on the terrace or in the garden. Because instead of a mast in the middle of the umbrella has a fixture above the parasol roof – the mast itself is then side. So a lot of shade is guaranteed. The sliding mechanism is usually connected to a crank, so that the screen can be relatively easily clamped. Disadvantage of the umbrella construction, however, is that it is not very stable and can tip over too much wind.

Half umbrella: This design, also called half center mast shield consists, as the name suggests, of only half a screen, which can be placed practically on the wall. Half umbrellas are perfect for setting up shadows on small balconies or terraces when an awning or awning is not an option. XXL parasol: Extra large versions have a particularly large span in diameter. Their design corresponds to either the market or the Ampelschirm.

What to look out for when buying a parasol:

Such a sunshade can turn out to be quite a shaky number, so important that you pay attention to the stability when buying. Also important: the longevity, after all, the screen is out in wind and weather and is not only exposed to the UV radiation exposed.

You can find a good model by, for example, taking a critical look at the materials. Here’s for the fabric: The higher the material density, the longer you have from your new sunshade. Particularly durable are awning fabrics with a density of about 300g / m², but also high quality polyester fabrics with about 180g / m² are a good choice. Not recommended are umbrellas made of cotton or linen. For those who like to be easy-care, they use a Teflon coating, which is easy to rinse off and clean with a little water.

In order to ensure UV protection under the sunshade, it is best to use a high-quality umbrella with the UPF seal (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) and a protection factor of at least 20. The scale here ranges from 15 to 80 and provides information about how much longer you can sit under the umbrella instead of in the blazing sun. And another tip for the color choice: Dark colors can fade relatively quickly, the more important therefore, that you pay attention to the label “lightfast” in the fabric.

Also, the linkage can provide information about whether the screen is stable. Particularly stylish looks with a screen with wooden struts, but these are relatively weather-prone and the material must be maintained. Uncomplicated and robust are aluminum struts. Here the umbrella construction is particularly light and also very stable. Not recommended are parasols with plastic struts.

So that the glider is wind- and weather-proof, one can put emphasis on a so-called wind release on the canopy: Such a wind hole defuses the wind force. Another advantage: The air can circulate better under the opened umbrella, so that on hot summer days, less heat accumulates.

Here are our recommendations for parasols:

The classic: market screen by Sekey

Simple but powerful: Good reviews and a fair price make the parasol by Sekey an Amazon’s Choice product. The 1.60 meter diameter umbrella has a polyester fabric cover with a protection factor of 20. The shade can be bent with a rotation joint to protect it even when the sun is low. And so you can make your favorite place in the garden according to your wishes, there is the umbrella in six different colors.

Environmentally friendly and practical: How to find suitable solar lights for the garden When ordering an umbrella stand or the holder is usually not there, the attachment must be purchased separately. Parasol stands are available in different variants, between which you can choose. Depending on the size of the shade and the location, the shade stands securely on granite or plastic feet, but also ground sleeves that are left in the ground, or balcony brackets are suitable as attachment for the shade.

Conclusion: What you need to consider when buying a parasol

Both a small balcony and a large garden area can be protected with a parasol. It is important that you decide before buying a construction that not only meets your needs, but can also be stably erected with an umbrella stand or anchoring in ground sockets. Other important factors include the UV protection of the material and the stability of the linkage. So there is nothing to stand in the way of relaxing hours of sunshine in your garden or on your balcony.
