Kitchen fittings comparison 2019

On the test and comparison portal of COMPUTER BILD we present you the best kitchen fittings. Kitchen fittings are available in almost every conceivable shape and color. This is precisely why many ask themselves which fitting is the right one for the local kitchen. Many additional functions and gadgets such as retractable fittings make a purchase decision difficult.

Our guide will introduce you to the basic differences of different designs and give you criteria that will help you make a choice. In addition, you can tell us whether the price actually says something about the quality according to tests of kitchen faucets. Make the comparison with us!

A kitchen faucet is already available for less than 20 euros. However, designer fittings from premium manufacturers usually cost several hundred euros.
We took a closer look at the differences in the design of kitchen faucets. In our guide you will find everything you need to know before buying single-lever and two-handle mixers, low pressure and designer fittings. In addition, we reveal how expensive kitchen faucets beat in current tests and answer frequently asked questions.

1. Types of kitchen faucets: with and without lever

Kitchen fittings are offered by various manufacturers in various designs. Most of these are made of stainless steel and have a more classic design. However, you will find in the range of some manufacturers even more unusual variants. First of all, we would like to show you the very basic differences between the different categories of kitchen faucets.

The latest developments include valves with sensors. Even if the technology used is no longer really new and sensor fittings are already known from public toilets, this variant has only been available for kitchen fittings for a comparatively short time.

Faucet can be operated without touching

Less dirt on the fittings

Water stops as soon as you leave

Faucet can be activated accidentally

No solution for soiling inside the valve

Quality and reliability also a cost issue

The classic alternative that can be found in almost every kitchen is the kitchen faucet with one or more mechanical levers. Even with these, however, there are some differences. On the one hand, a single-lever mixer and two-handle mixers are distinguished, which are also available as pull-out kitchen faucets with a hose spray, and on the other hand, the installation position at the sink and above the spout is decisive.

Usually, fittings are mounted directly above the sink. Alternatively, however, there are also wall-mounted kitchen faucets, which have the advantage that you have a lot of room when swinging or undressing. These and other brief information on the mentioned fittings can be found in our table:

Can be operated with one hand

Water jet and temperature are regulated by a single lever

Lever is attached to the side or top of the fitting

Two-handle mixer

Water jet and temperature are set separately

Also available as pull-out kitchen mixer with shower

Faucet is mounted on the wall

Also as swivel and pull-out kitchen faucet

Can also be found as washbasin faucet and bath mixer

2. Design fittings as a kitchen accessory

If a normal stainless steel kitchen faucet is too boring and who also finds a kitchen faucet in black or another color too unspectacular, comes at design fittings fully at his expense. There are now a considerable selection of sophisticated and unusual looks for fittings.

Edged or curved shapes are very popular and make a tap appear as a noble art object. The quality of these kitchen faucets are high standards, but also have their price. If you want to keep the look of your kitchen very clean, there are also retractable fittings that disappear into the worktop when they are not needed.

2.1. The choice of material: Shiny fittings are more intensive care

You get a variety of design options. The most commonly used kitchen mixer is still stainless steel. This material has the great advantage of not rusting, being relatively easy to care for and not costing huge sums of money. However, it is worth taking a look at the alternatives. You can choose from brass, chrome, bronze and certain quartzes. Visually, chrome fittings are most similar to those made of stainless steel.

Both variants are available in shiny and brushed form. However, with other materials even dark, dull colors to black kitchen faucets are feasible. However, if you prefer high-gloss faucets, you must be aware that even the smallest of impurities can be seen very quickly. For sanitary safety, fittings made of brass or bronze are also nickel-plated.

2.2. Criteria for kitchen fittings purchase advice

If you want to buy a new kitchen faucet and want to use tests and comparisons with kitchen faucets in advance, then it is important to know the purchase criteria. In addition to the design and the choice of materials, it is also important how big and heavy a fitting is. Also interesting are the extras, for example, a kitchen faucet with hose shower offers. The pressure conditions of the mixer should also be known. In our list you will find all important criteria in short form:

Type (single-lever mixer, two-lever mixer, etc.)

Weight in kg

2.3. Where do fittings play a role?

Although this guide is about kitchen faucets, other types of faucets are also used as bath or shower faucets. Similar to retractable kitchen faucets, there are also removable and removable variants here. However, normal hose showers are more common.

3. Kitchen Faucet Tests: Expensive is not a quality feature

Kitchen Faucets Comparisons in 2019 criticize the fact that even with higher-priced kitchen faucets occasionally quality defects occur. The price is therefore not a clear indicator of the longevity of a valve. However, the best kitchen faucets are characterized by being particularly easy to clean. Also, a relatively cheap kitchen faucet can keep long enough for proper care, so that the purchase is worthwhile. This includes regular decalcification.

Tip: A clogged drain can be relatively easily cleaned with home remedies such as baking soda or soda and vinegar. The goal is that the leftovers that have caught, be solved and washed up.

4. Manufacturers and prices: large manufacturers mostly in the premium area on the way

A swivel arm is practical for large pools. The price range for kitchen fittings is extremely large. The cheapest models do not cost 20 euros, the most expensive often several hundred. Grohe tends to be one of the more expensive brands. A Grohe kitchen faucet can cost between 50 and just under 400 euros. Both relatively simple, as well as unusual kitchen fittings Grohe has in the range. In addition, sink fittings are also available in a set with water heaters.

Also the company Hansgrohe manufactures kitchen fittings and is therefore sometimes confused with the aforementioned manufacturer. Although the two companies have the same origin, today they are competitors. Hansgrohe is also generally considered one of the premium manufacturers.

5. Questions and answers about kitchen faucets

5.1. Which manufacturers are there?

Kitchen fittings are offered by many well-known manufacturers. We have created a selection of the most important brands for you:

Villeroy & Boch

5.2. What does low pressure mean in a kitchen mixer?

Low-pressure kitchen faucet refers to a faucet for the kitchen intended for an open water heater. Since these boilers work without pressure, a special fitting is necessary. If the faucet on the sink is activated, new cold water flows directly into the water heater. Low-pressure kitchen faucets are in addition to the kitchen as a separate version for bathrooms.

There they are often used in subsequently furnished guest toilets. With the models for the kitchen you have all the typical variants to choose from. In no case, however, should an open boiler be provided with a common fitting. The water maker will be damaged within a very short time and become unusable.

Note: In most cases, an open boiler and the associated kitchen faucet are required for a decentralized hot water supply. It should be noted, however, that there are also high pressure boilers for these purposes.

5.3. How do I connect a kitchen faucet?

Old faucets can make high costs for water. If you have some manual skill or experience, you can install a kitchen mixer with a little time and patience yourself. The most important elements for connecting a valve are normally included in the delivery. In addition, however, you should provide a bucket and an open-end wrench. Even a hacksaw can be helpful, but is not always necessary.

In the first step, the siphon must be removed under the sink. The resulting residues of the water can be disposed of in a bucket. Before you replace the angle valves, the main water tap must be turned off. The hoses for connection can then be safely loosened. If there is still an old tap in the kitchen, this must also be solved from below. Once all hoses and the fitting have been loosened, they can easily be pulled out from above. If you replace the angle valves before installing the new kitchen faucet, you should prepare them with sealing paste.

5.4. Is there already a kitchen mixer test by Stiftung Warentest?

Neither Stiftung Warentest nor other well-known test portals such as Ökotest have not carried out their own test with kitchen fittings. For this reason, unfortunately, we can not call you a kitchen mixer test winner. However, the tap in the kitchen must also be maintained accordingly. This care includes regular and thorough cleaning.
